Once I made the decision to give art my all back in July, my attention quickly turned to – Ok, now where do I start?
Much of the art I was drawn to initially on-line seemed to be digital art – a process I wasn’t too familiar with at the time – and this led me through a period of Google saturation and general fumbling about (sure, you could call it procrastination, or you could simply call it for what it was – the fear of failure manifested in the inability to start anywhere or anything) I eventually discovered Ctrl+Paint, an instructional site from conceptual artist and illustrator Matt Kohr.
What impressed me most by what Matt had developed at Ctrl+Paint was the volume of free content in the form of an instructional video library of tutorials centered around all aspects of digital painting.
Now I had myself a jump off point, a place to start.
Matt however stressed:
“Before you can paint, you need to know how to draw. At art school they call this “foundation studies”, and all students must take these basic subjects before proceeding into their concentration.”
As I made my way though these initial exercises which extensively covered traditional drawing, composition basics, using reference materials, anatomy and perspective, I rediscovered my love of traditional art and any thoughts of venturing into the digital art world faded into the background.
I was on my way.
