This small value study only happened after a surprising window of time opened up unexpectedly – I might get one, maybe two hours uninterrupted if things fell my way.
Problem was I really hadn’t put a lot of thought into what I was going to paint.
After eyeing off a pint glass on the kitchen sink, I gave it a quick rinse, filled it with water and strode out to the shed (I could say studio but that would be way too generous a title in its present state) to see what I could muster up.
I thought it’d be a decent challenge to see if I could give a reasonable representation of light through glass in just black, white and grey. The shadow thrown by the texture in the glass was an added extra to keep the mind ticking over.
Was reasonably happy with the result.
I do need to work on my composition skills though as I was more concerned about fitting the glass and shadow into the space I had rather than the overall balance of the image, and as a result I feel it is weighted too heavily to the left.
But at the end of the day, that’s what these little studies are for, practising, discovering and learning.
